From the abstract
A 40-year-old woman was admitted with severe Plasmodium falciparum malaria. Although she improved clinically under intravenous artesunate, parasitemia unexpectedly increased. Reassessment identified previously unrecognized functional hyposplenism, leading to delayed clearance of non-viable parasites and falsely suggesting artemisinin resistance.
